Katherine House resident, Jane has fond memories of going to wrestling matches with her late husband in Ireland. These were special occasions for the couple and the outings meant a lot to them both. Jane mentioned to our Wellbeing Team that she would love to attend to a live wrestling match again and so we made her dream come true as part of the One Wish Project.
The Wellbeing Team got to work by sourcing a local accessible venue with an exciting and interactive wrestling event, ‘Kapow & SWF Return to Thornbury.’ The event promised a night of hard hitting and high-flying action which was perfect for adrenaline junkie, Jane. Our maintenance man, Neil, volunteered his own time to drive Jane and the team to the venue and this made the journey to Thornbury much easier whilst allowing Jane to choose how long she wanted to stay.
Jane felt like a VIP as she was escorted to the venue on our private minibus, with the wellbeing team on board to help raise excitement. On the way to Thornbury, we were able to look over the water to a clear view of Wales. Jane used to live in Wales and this brought back happy memories for her as she told us tales of her life before Katherine House.
There was a buzz in the air as we arrived at the venue and Jane was so enthusiastic. We joined in with the crowd, cheering in anticipation for the big match to start, purchased an inflatable hammer so Jane could ‘hit the baddies’ and even tried on some fabulous brightly coloured wrestling masks!
When the match started, Jane was in her element and her expressive reactions to the fight was enough to put a smile on anyone’s face. Jane was laughing, gasping, punching the air and fully immersed in the match, getting involved by ‘high-fiving’ wrestlers as they passed by.
Additionally, we booked a very special ‘Meet & Greet’ so Jane was able to meet her wrestling heroes and pose for photos with them. Jane thanked us for a ‘brilliant time’ and felt so happy to have taken part in such a fun and memorable day.
“It looks like my mum had an absolute whale of a time! Thank you so much. We would never have thought of it and it’s brought back lots of happy memories for all of us! It has revived lots of memories for me as I had forgotten that my mother and father used to enjoy going to watch wrestling matches. Our parents rarely went out in the evening when we were children so these were very special occasions for the both of them. Thank you so much for putting so much thought into this for our mother.”
